Important
If you develop a cold, fever, or change in your condition during the week before your surgery, please notify your surgeon.
If you smoke, please stop smoking 48 hours prior to surgery.
Once your surgery is complete, you will be taken to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU/Recovery Room) for observation by nurses specifically trained in caring for patients after anesthesia and surgery. You will stay in the unit until you are ready to be admitted to the hospital or be discharged home.
The surgeon will speak with your designated contact person after your surgery. He/She needs to let the ambulatory care nurse know where he/she will be or how to be contacted. Once you are awake your family may join you. Verbal and written instructions about medications, diet, and home care will be given to you and your caregiver prior to discharge.
“Anesthesia and nursing are specially trained and experienced in providing care not only for adult patients but also for pediatric patients. That’s an added level of reassurance for all parents.”
– Gabriel O. Te, M.D.
Otolaryngologist (ENT) Surgeon
Please make arrangements for a responsible adult to drive you home upon discharge. If you are a day surgery patient you may go by taxi, but only if accompanied by a responsible adult. If you are an inpatient, please arrange a ride by 11 am on the day of discharge.
A nurse will call you the next day to check on your well being. Please take this opportunity to share any thoughts about your experience. Your feedback is important to help us best meet the needs of our patients and their families.
We understand that children have special needs. There are things you can do to help make your child more comfortable while in the hospital:
Explain to your child that you will be able to accompany him/her to the operating room and will be present while anesthesia is given. You will also be allowed in the recovery room if your child is under the age of 12.
