Endoscopy is a procedure that allows direct visualization of the inside of the gastrointestinal system. This procedure is performed using an endoscope which has a light source on the end of the scope. Using this endoscope the physician may take samples of the tissue of the gastrointestinal system and/or remove polyps that may be present. It is also possible to treat bleeding that may occur within the GI system.

Conditions that may be diagnosed include:

  • stomach or small intestine ulcers
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • cancer of the gastrointestinal system

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States. Your lifetime chance of developing this deadly disease is about 1 in 16. The good news is the death rate from colorectal cancer has been dropping in recent years, a trend that can be attributed to regular screening and early detection.

At Edgewood Surgical Hospital, we recommend that all adults age 50 and older should have a colonoscopy every 10 years to screen for signs of possible cancer. Removing colon polyps before cancer has a chance to develop is the best prevention available. Unfortunately, only about a third of individuals eligible for regular colon exams actually have the procedure. Many people avoid this simple test because of embarrassment or concerns about discomfort.

At Edgewood Surgical Hospital, we are committed to making your colonoscopy experience as comfortable and convenient as possible. Every step of the process, from prep through recovery, has been designed with your well-being and satisfaction in mind. The day before the procedure you will be educated on foods specially selected to be compatible with the prep process. Upon arrival at the hospital we provide robes, blankets, socks and other amenities to help keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Many people report waking up afterward with no recollection of any discomfort whatsoever. After a brief recovery time, most people feel well enough to resume their daily activities.
